Water: The First Step Toward Real Health
by Kari Barron
Back in my senior year of high school, our church youth group hosted an epic water gun fight. One team filled their water guns with red food coloring, the other with green. The goal was simple—whichever team got “colored” the most lost. By the end, though, it was clear we all lost… because we were all red and green!
It was hilarious at the time, but later it became the perfect picture of how even a little extra ingredient changes everything. Just like that food coloring stained our clothes and skin, what’s in your water leaves a mark—sometimes one that lasts longer than you realize.
Pure, Clean, Energetic Water — Not Other Beverages
Our bodies need water—not substitutes. Coffee, tea, soda, and juice don’t hydrate the same way.
In You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty!, Dr. Batmanghelidj lists 46 reasons your body needs water. The Mayo Clinic summarizes several of them beautifully:
Water helps:
• Regulate body temperature
• Moisten tissues in the eyes, nose, and mouth
• Protect organs and tissues
• Carry nutrients and oxygen to cells
• Lubricate joints
• Ease the workload on kidneys and liver
• Dissolve minerals and nutrients for absorption
Those aren’t minor details — they’re vital. Every system in your body depends on clean water to function properly.
God’s Design for Hydration
God created our bodies to need specific inputs to thrive (see
Part 1 for the full list).
In Genesis 1:29-30, He promises everything we need for life and health through His creation — and that includes water.
Many people today focus on alkaline water, but let’s take a step back and look at what God designed your stomach to do.
Why Alkaline Water May Work Against You
Naturally high-pH water is rare in nature. If it were essential, wouldn’t God have provided it abundantly through springs everywhere?
Here’s why I’m cautious about artificially alkaline water:
- Your stomach is meant to be acidic (around pH 2) to digest proteins properly.
- Drinking high-pH water forces your body to create more acid to restore balance, which drains energy.
- Stomach acid also kills parasites and harmful bacteria — so lowering that acid makes you more vulnerable.
Balance is God’s idea. He designed your stomach to be acidic and your tissues to stay gently alkaline — each part with a purpose.
Choose Pure Water for True Cleansing
I recommend distilled or reverse-osmosis purified water.
Some argue that distilled water “lacks minerals,” but I prefer knowing my water is truly just water — no unknown mineral sources, no lingering chemicals, and no residues that could stay in my body.
Think of water as your body’s internal cleaning system. It brings nutrients into cells and carries waste out. For that cleansing to happen effectively, your water must be clean too.
A Kitchen Lesson on Hydration
When we moved to Texas, we lived in what my friend affectionately called a “one-butt kitchen.” Each family member had one plate, one bowl, and one cup. After every meal, we washed our own dishes.
Now imagine washing dishes in soapy water — and then rinsing with coffee or soda instead of clean water. Would your dishes be clean? Not likely.
The same is true inside your body. If you “rinse” your cells with sugary or caffeinated drinks, they’re never truly clean. Water is the only liquid that rinses you clean at the cellular level.

God made your body to heal when you give it what it needs — starting with water.
If you’ve been feeling drained, foggy, or slow to recover, dehydration may be just one piece of the picture. Sometimes, deeper imbalances like inflammation, toxin buildup, or nutrient depletion are also at play.
